Near the Novartis Campus in Basel, the STEIH site was a contaminated chemical area. Polluted in the 70's by a local chemical factory, Novartis bought the land. In 2012, a taskforce was mounted to decontaminate the land and required a pressurised tent, the size of a football field, to avoid ground dust to pollute the air. The extracted soil was sent to the Netherlands in sealed containers and boat cargo holds, where it was treated. A special boat had to be built, on which the captain still lives with his family.
